M-Panel is based at the Institute for Social Research (ISR), which is the world’s largest academic social science survey and research organization. For over 80 years, ISR has provided the public and the research community with high-quality data enabling important insights on some of the most important issues facing people worldwide.

The University of Michigan National Survey Panel (known as M-Panel) is formed by a sample of people from across the country who were scientifically selected to share their opinions on the issues that shape American life. We reach out to our panel members to find out what they think about topics important to our society like education, health, or economy.

When we have questions about topics important to our society like education, health, or economy, we will reach out to our panel members to find out what they think.

But it is just as important to us to be clear about what M-Panel is not:

Our Team

James Wagner

James Wagner

James Wagner is a Research Professor at the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center (UM-SRC). James has more than 30 years of experience working on surveys, including survey sampling. His research interests include nonresponse and methods for addressing it during data collection. Given his expertise in these areas, he has served as a consultant to several federal statistical agencies on methods for improving data quality. He has extensive experience with survey sampling and is currently Director of Sampling for UM-SRC. James serves as the Scientific Director for the M-Panel.

Stephanie Chardoul

Stephanie Chardoul

Stephanie Chardoul is the Director of Survey Research Operations (SRO) at the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center. Ms. Chardoul has 35+ years of experience in all phases of survey research. During her tenure at SRC, she has been the Manager of the Survey Services Laboratory (telephone facility), Senior Survey Director, Director of the Project Design and Management Group (project managers and directors), and Director of Proposals (new project intake and design). Her substantive interests include cross-cultural survey methods, building survey research infrastructure, and mental health. Stephanie is also the co-Director of the World Mental Health Survey Consortium, and the University of Michigan principal investigator on multiple external data collection projects conducted by SRO. As SRO Director, Stephanie leads a department of 170 full-time staff and up to 1000 interviewers across the U.S., conducting data collection across all modes and technologies. Stephanie serves as the Managing Director of the Michigan National Survey Panel.
